A practitioner identifies a separation of two or more finger-widths (approximately 2 cm or more) between the rectus abdominis muscle bands while the patient performs a slight abdominal contraction such as a head-lift or crunch. Imaging methods such as ultrasound imaging (USI) or CT scans can also be used to obtain precise measurements, commonly taken at 3 cm above and below the umbilicus." } }, { "@type": "Question", "name": "What are effective at-home exercises to close diastasis recti safely?", "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Effective at-home exercises for diastasis recti focus on strengthening the deep core muscles, particularly the transverse abdominis, and improving posture to reduce intra-abdominal pressure. Key strategies include controlled, targeted exercises, proper breathing techniques, and avoiding movements that cause abdominal doming or bulging." } }, { "@type": "Question", "name": "When is surgery recommended for diastasis recti repair?", "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Surgery for diastasis recti may be recommended when physiotherapy or Pilates fails to resolve significant functional issues such as persistent back pain or hernia, or when the diastasis remains wide (often around 5 cm) and non-functional. Typically, at least six months of postnatal Pilates or physiotherapy is advised before considering surgery to improve surgical outcomes." } }, { "@type": "Question", "name": "How does pelvic floor therapy help diastasis recti recovery?", "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Pelvic floor therapy supports diastasis recti recovery by improving coordination between the pelvic floor, transverse abdominis, and other deep core muscles. Together, these muscles form a functional canister that distributes intra-abdominal pressure evenly, creating a stable inner corset that supports the spine and reduces strain on the diastasis recti." } }, { "@type": "Question", "name": "What are the differences between diastasis recti and ventral hernia diagnosis?", "acceptedAnswer": { "@type": "Answer", "text": "Diastasis recti is characterized by a separation of the abdominal muscles with an intact linea alba (connective tissue). In contrast, a ventral hernia involves a defect or hole in the abdominal wall, creating a localized bulge where organs or tissues can protrude. Hernias are often painful, whereas diastasis recti typically is not." } } ] }
